Our Story

A Custodian Opens His Doors

Forty years of collecting. One room to share it.

Our Founder

◆

Baba Raymond Khoo

Chef · Collector · Philanthropist · and the man who opened his home to Singapore.

Raymond learned to cook watching his grandmother. He learned to collect by haunting the antique lanes of Malacca, Penang, and Batavia for four decades. He learned what community means from forty years of running the Saturday Movement — feeding Singapore’s most vulnerable seniors long before it was fashionable to care.

The Peranakan Club is the convergence of all three. A kitchen that has never needed a consultant. A museum that took forty years to fill. A business whose primary purpose is to fund someone else’s dinner.

Together with Janet Khoo, Raymond runs an institution that refuses every category it is placed in. Not a restaurant. Not a gallery. Not a charity event. All three — simultaneously — at Level 2, Orchard Towers.

Orchard Towers. Second Floor. Yes, Really.

We chose it deliberately. Not despite its reputation — because of what it represents.

The Peranakan Club is part of the building’s cultural renaissance. Where the ground floor once belonged to the night, the second floor now belongs to heritage. The entrance has pintu pagar swing doors. You will know it immediately.

What We Stand For

Our Values

Proud, Never Boastful

We state what we have. We do not oversell it. Forty years of collecting speaks without embellishment.

Specific, Always

Never “traditional recipes” — always Nasi Ulam Dulu Kala, twenty-two herbs, hand-shredded. The detail is the respect.

A Room You Can Touch

The artefacts are not behind glass. You eat off nyonyaware. You sit beneath a chandelier from a colonial estate. This is the whole point.

The Collection

Every object has been acquired personally — over four decades.
